Ballerina in light pink dress - pack of 6 greetings cards with envelopes
I have stepped away from my career as a lawyer to follow my dream of becoming a full-time artist. I have always drawn in my spare time. I did an art GCSE, but, apart from a couple of painful painting lessons given by my brilliant-at-painting, but appallingly-at-teaching, maternal grandfather (affectionately, but inaccurately, named by his grandchildren as “dandy”) that was as far as my art training went.
My kinder family members have my drawings and paintings hanging in their homes. My middling-kind family members have a folder in a drawer full of hand-drawn cards I have sent them over the years. My least kind family members state that they find it difficult to throw away my artistic efforts, but they manage it anyway…

A legal career did not give me a huge amount of spare time and when I did get a moment to breathe, I wanted to spend it outside.
A desk-bound hobby was far from ideal during my first career, which was very much desk-oriented in itself. Therefore, my artistic side only found an outlet in doodles while on conference calls and in excessively neat, handwritten mark-ups of documents.
Law was the sensible career choice and I loved it, but as I approach fifty, I felt it was time to give myself the opportunity to see if I can make a living from my art.
In terms of what inspires me to draw, it can be anything. I rarely look at the countryside or a building without thinking about how I would draw it and which bits would cause me grief if I did. I adore being outside, regardless of whether I am in open countryside or an urban setting.
Wherever I find myself, I like the excitement of a place where it is not possible to see what is coming next. There is little better than exploring a new city on one of my hastily compiled self-guided walking tours and turning a corner to see a super-wonky, timber-framed renaissance town house or a gorgeous nineteenth century, red brick warehouse. I have a massive stash of photos of such places ready to be drawn when I get the chance.
And, at the end of every walk, there must be cake.
My career change involves a huge leap of faith and the support of my family and friends. I could not do this alone.

I am hoping that, through art,
I can make a positive contribution to the world. -
For me, life is all about the detail. In drawings, in conversations, in relationships, the subtle change and nuance intrigues me. I would like to encourage people take a deeper, longer look at the world around us.

Focus on the detail
